Have you ever wondered why police officers wear tactical gear? You may not know why this type of protective clothing is necessary. Maybe it seems like too much for police offices or you didn?t know that people outside of the military needed to wear things like body armor plates and bulletproof vests. However, as a police officer, their lives are put in danger on a day-to-day basis. Each day a police officer heads into work, they never know what may happen. That?s why it?s crucial to always be prepared in their skillset and with what they?re wearing.

3 Reasons Police Officers Always Need to Be Prepared
If you grew up in a safe, small, quiet town, you may have never seen police officers having to handle tough situations. This happens on a regular basis throughout the United States. Police officers are put in scenarios where they must know how to use their weapons, deal with criminals, and avoid getting injured or killed. Here?s three reasons why tactical gear like bulletproof body armor and vest are necessary.
1. Gun shot wounds
As a police officer, you have to be prepared for anything that could happen on the job. You may only have to deal with someone getting their purse stolen during one shift. The next shift may be a totally different story where you have to go into a crime scene unsure whether or not the criminal is still and whether or not the criminal has a weapon.
Gun shot wounds kills 62 police officers in 2016 according to data from the FBI. There were only four other law enforcement officer deaths that year not related to firearms. If a police officer is shot in the torso, it can be very difficult to save their life. That?s one reason why wearing tactical gear like armor vests matters so much. It can increase a police officer?s chance of living after getting shot by 3.4 times. All-in-all, over the last three decades, more than 3,000 police officers? lives have been spared due to armor vests alone.
2. Know how to use their weapons
On top of tactical protective gear, police officers have to be armed with the best firearms and weapons. In many cases, this is to protect other citizens from any dangerous situations. At other times, the firearms may be used by police officers for self protection or to protect another officer. However, if they aren?t properly trained in how to use their firearm, how to deploy their firearm, or how to take down a criminal, something could go wrong.
In the last ten year, around 33 law enforcement officers were killed with their own weapons, according to the FBI. This is why it is crucial that all police officers have the necessary training to protect them from criminals who may try to take them down and steal their firearms. No one wants their own weapon used against them.
3. Body armor
In addition to using high quality bulletproof vests, police officers need to have other tactical gear for full body protection in certain scenarios. Since 1978, around 87 police officers? lives in New York City have been saved due to wearing body armor. Although tactical gear may make police officers look more intimidating to civilians, it could save their lives. For some, it could be the difference between life and death if they come across a criminal with a firearm or some other type of weapon. There?s no reason why civilians should be intimidated by police officers who are simply trying to protect themselves so that they can continue to protect citizens.
