Whether you play tennis competitively or you occasionally get together with friends to play a set or two, it’s much more fun to play when you’re improving your game and honing your skills. Below are some basic tennis serves tips that may prove helpful.

Feet Placement

The very first part of ensuring a valid serve is to make sure that your feet are behind the base line. It doesn’t matter how strong your serve is if one or both of your feet encroach on the line.

Holding Your Racquet

You’ll want to make sure your grip is firm but comfortable. If you hold the racquet too tightly, this can have a negative impact on the quality of your serve. If you feel tension in your hand, an adjustment needs to be made.

Establishing a Rhythm

This is among the more crucial tennis serve tips. Each player has his or her own routine, but establishing a consistent practice when at the line to serve will only help you put the ball in play with more accuracy and velocity. Perhaps you like to bounce the ball a few times before serving. Maybe you throw the ball high in the air to achieve a comfortable serve. Ultimately, you should stick with whatever works best for you.

Eye on the Ball

This may seem like the most obvious of tennis serving tips, but it is so critical that it needs to be mentioned. Without putting all your concentration on the ball, you may find that its placement on the racquet is off, which can result in a “fault” or otherwise ineffective serve. Your goal will of course be to hit the sweet spot of the racquet consistently, and in order to do this, the focus needs to be there.

Returning the Serve

As for tennis return of serve tips, it would be wise to establish a strategy from the get go. Specifically, you’ll want to get your opponent to work as hard as possible to get the point, which likely means putting the ball in areas where the player will have to travel the farthest to have a play. Doing this on a regular basis can throw your opponent off rhythm.
